There are a few Novice Obedience exercises where you can use both as someone already has mentioned but for most exercises in all levels it's an either or situation. ![]() Your dog can now either stare at the treat or look at your. Yes, in Novice Obedience you can give a hand signal OR a verbal command to start heeling-but that's the only command (which ever one you choose) you can give as the sit in the heel is supposed to be automatic. Follow these steps: Hold a treat to your dog’s nose then slowly move your hand out to the side of your body so your arm is straight. For the Utility signal exercise you can ONLY use hand signals-no voice commands. You can use a hand signal instead of a verbal command for everything (although in Utility it doesn't work well for the send out in the directed jumping 'cause your dog would have to be looking over its shoulder the whole time) that I can think of. One of my Dobes in the past did the recall in Novice as a verbal command but the finish as a hand signal. There are some exercises where you can use either in the same exercise. Teaching watch me as a command is very similar, except that you sign Look to the dog before trying to get them to look at you.
